The common notion of aquaponics is centred around food production. This is linked to the efficient use of water, low nutrient input and production capabilities that are so well suited to local urban communities. The ability to utilise disused buildings and unproductive walls and rooftops only serve to promote this idealistic intention. However fish and plants do not have to be eaten. Their beauty and ornamental appeal has been widely recognised for centuries. In addition the wildlife value that could be introduced into our cities through aquaponics should not be underestimated.
